HUNTING THE HOUND OF COLD HOLLOW – FREE ON YOUTUBE

HOUNDPI
“Hunting the Hound of Cold Hollow” is a short documentary created by writer and independent documentary film-maker, J.D. Thompson covering the early stages of an investigation into an ancient New England Werewolf legend hidden in the sleepy mountain towns of the Cold Hollow mountain region of Vermont.“

“Hunting the Hound of Cold Hollow” Opening

RATING: 3 Charley’s
I’m on the fence with this one. First, it’s created by an accomplished documentary film maker and author, J.D. Thompson. Because of this fact, the production value is excellent, so it’s a pleasure to watch and it’s very informative. I am well familiar with supposed “Werewolf” and “Dog Men” cryptid reports from all over the country, but I was not familiar with reports from this particular area of Vermont. So I was intrigued when I stumbled across this FREE documentary on YouTube.

B&B Signage
Interesting B&B Thomson stayed at.
Of course it could be a Bear, they do have them in Cold Hollow.

A general google search only turned up references to “Hunting the Hound of Cold Hollow.”  “Werewolves in Vermont” turned up a sighting in Green Mountain National Park, I have included recorded report down below in the REFERENCE section.

Hunting the for Hound of Cold Hollow seemed a little too polished at first viewing, because I was expecting a gritty documentary film style. Immediately I questioned if the people appearing in the film were actors or not? None of them were identified on screen, so that’s usually a red flag. Luckily, Thompson clears this question up in his FAQ, that’s conveniently included in the description of the video on his YouTube post. (Which, BTW, is a must read.) “They are not actors and they are all residents of the Cold Hollow region.” That doesn’t mean they are the actual first-hand witnesses however. Thompson also uses the discredited Gable film* and refers to it as a hoax and further discusses it in the same FAQ.

Supposed actual “Howlings” recorded of an unknown animal by an unnamed resident of Cold Hollow. Audio courtesy of Justin Larose.

There are several references in the movie to historical events involving “Werewolves” in the area. Specifically; “In 1951, an article featured in National Geographic reported sightings of the Werewolf as far south as Washington County, Vermont in the forests near Groton Pond.” Which is only about 1 hour and 30 minutes south from the Cold Hollow region.

I couldn’t check this article out as I have to be a subscriber to Nat. Geo. to get online access to the archives. Perhaps there is a Fortean researcher reading this right now who is a subscriber and can please look this article up? Unfortunately, the issue number and date are not mentioned in the video.

There’s also a strange incident of a cheaply acquired ancient Irish book on shape-shifters that is later stolen from Thompson. Other than a quick mention at the very end of the video “that there were criminal proceedings against the suspect, but no charges were ever filed.” It’s never adequately explained. It’s all these loose ends that bother me.

From the standpoint of this documentary serving as an introduction to a possibly new Fortean hot-spot in Vermont, inhabited by a cryptid, the video delivers on that. If it also serves as a catalyst for more serious research, all the better. Such research might encourage credible witnesses to come forth. These events may add some substance to what is now considered a legend lurking in the Cold Hollow Mountains. My greatest concern is that the “Hound and/or “Werewolf”” takes on a life of its own and becomes an internet meme, much the way the Slenderman mouse-clicked his way into the exclusive, member’s only, Fortean Club.

Linda Godfrey was a reporter at the time in 1992 when the Beast of Bray road made its’ ominous appearance in Elkhorn WI. Here, Godfrey showcases her first article about the local “Werewolf.”

Featured in the video is Linda Godfrey, investigator and author. Godfrey is the original reporter who broke the Bray Beast story, plus other paranormal events in Elkhorn WI., including animal mutilations and UFO sightings. Mind you all of these events and terrifying encounters are just the tip of the iceberg in this well produced piece of Fortean gold.

JAY B
Paranormal Investigator Jay Bachochin of Elkhorn, agrees with Godfrey that Wisconsin has long been a hot-spot of paranormal activity.

Still the question remains, why is this four and half mile long lonely country road subject to reoccurring visits from a “Werewolf?”

THE BRIDGEWATER TRIANGLE MYSTERY

BWTPI

The Bridgewater Triangle” hosts an unusually high volume of reports involving strange happenings, baffling mysteries and sinister deeds. From ghostly hauntings and cryptid animal sightings, to UFO encounters and evidence of satanic ritual sacrifice, this 200-square mile region in Southeastern Massachusetts serves as one of the world’s most diverse and well-known hot spots for paranormal activity
AMAZON PRIME’S BLURB

Was the strange creature that William Russo encountered on a late night walk with his dog one of the dreaded Pukwudgies that the local Wampanoag Indian tribe fears? Here is his chilling account.

RATING:  5 Charley’s
The Bridgewater Triangle encompasses slightly over 200 miles of weird in southeastern Massachusetts. Its points are anchored in the north, by the city of Abington. In the southeast, Freetown and in the southwest, Rehoboth.

TRIANGLE CROP
From ghoulies and ghosties. And long-leggedy beasties
And things that go bump in the night, Good Lord, deliver us!
Traditional Scottish Prayer

And when I write weird, I actually mean REALLY WEIRD. There is not one denizen of the ranks of the  Fortean Pantheon that does not make its appearance in the triangle. Some on a hauntingly regular basis. And this documentary covers them all. The value of the video is that it interviews key investigators and witnesses. So, it’s mostly first-hand source data for you to consider.

KPWAE
Like the Mothman story in Point Pleasant WV, the Bridgewater Triangle legend begins with Native American and settlers conflicts. The bloody war that spread throughout New England was known as King Philip’s War, named after the Chief who lead the uprising. Five percent of New England’s population was killed in the struggle. Today, many people think there’s an Indian curse on the land, just as the people of Point Pleasant believe their town is cursed in the same way.  (See my review: Eyes of the Mothman.)

Overall it’s an entertaining and highly informative video. If you’ve never heard of the Bridgewater Triangle before, here’s your Masters’ Degree course on it.  Then after viewing it, ask yourself “Can all of these incredible things be happening in an area that anyone on the east coast can easily drive to?”

LORENC Loren Colman
Appearing throughout the video is the much respected researcher Loren Colman. In 1983, Cryptozoologist Colman published his book, Mysterious America. In it he described a 200 square-mile region in southeastern Massachusetts with a long history of strange, paranormal, and sometimes, sinister activity. He called the region, The Bridgewater Triangle.

THE EYES OF THE MOTHMAN

EYESMMPI
Toting his cameras to the backwoods of West Virginia, documentarian Matthew J. Pellowski attempts to unmask the mystery of the Mothman, a strange, winged creature sighted by four friends in the ‘60s that appeared to spawn a rash of tragic deaths. The incident has gone unexplained for decades but many locals believe that they, too, saw the Mothman…and some fear they might see him again.
Blurb from Amazon Prime

OFFICIAL TRAILER

RATING: 5 Charley’s
The name, Abominable Snowman, was coined in 1921 from foot prints reportedly discovered during the British Mount Everest expedition*. It took almost 100 years for the mythological beast to enter into our collective unconscious to become a cultural icon in the U.S. Now called Bigfoot, Sasquatch and numerous other regional names, we may be very soon on the cusp of acknowledging its existence.

Fast forward to November 12th 1966. Two young couples encounter a terrifying apparition with two huge glowing red eyes that takes flight and pursues their car up to speeds of 100 miles per hour. They escape to a police station and shudder while they make their report of a “large flying man with ten-foot wings”, following their car.”* Thus the legend of Mothman is born.

In comparison to the Abominable Snowman, it’s only taken Mothman 50 years to become a recognizable and accepted cultural icon to the public in general. You don’t have to be a Fortean expert to know who or what Mothman is. Of course many factors have helped speed up this process. The internet for one, social media for the other.
UFO COMPOSITE
What did this massive UFO (Artist’s conception) seen by
multiple eyewitness, have to do with the Mothman and
the disappearance of Merle Partridge’s dog, Bandit?

But the real reason for Mothman’s rise to fame was on the fateful night of November 12th 1966. That sighting event kicked off a series of unexplainable paranormal activity that lasted for 13 months and ended with the tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant West Virginia.
SILVER BRIDGE
The memorial plaque for the victims of that tragic event.

The  intense activity consisted of repeated encounters with the Mothman, UFO sightings, visitations of the fearful Men-in-Black, unexplained flashes of lights, chilling ghost-like activity in the
town and more.

This two and a half hour documentary, with interviews of actual eyewitnesses, covers all the aspects of the Mothman mystery and his infamous visit to Point Pleasant.

ON THE YETI TRAIL- FREE

OTYTI

For the first time in over a century, Yeti legends and personal accounts have become the subject of scientific studies. Does the yeti really exist? Fascinating and thorough, this film sets out to meet the teams involved in this strange race across the world, featuring laboratories, hair analysis, footprints and DNA as well as the search for samples in Indonesia and the Canadian reserves.
Amazon Prime’s Blurb.

RATING: 3 Charley’s.
A totally fascinating and informative video, and the expert international cast of field researchers and scientists is truly impressive and unprecedented. You will learn a lot from watching this film, not only about the continuing enigma of Bigfoot, but how the scientific method analyzes purported evidence.

So why not a better Charley rating?

Despite the fact that the many scientists, who were interviewed expressed a willingness to have open-minds, but guarded opinions on the subject of Yeti/Sasquatch/Bigfoot, I felt the documentary crashed at the end.  As it turned out, at least for me, it proved to be very disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect it to come out with definitive proof of the discovery of a new human or animal species, but I thought the insinuated atmosphere of open-mindedness would carry the day.

First, the editing was slanted in a particular way. The American team’s DNA analysis, which was presented in the middle of the film, arrived at more possible and stronger evidence that there may indeed be something tangible and real running around out there in the wilderness. These findings alone calls for more serious field and laboratory study. This report would also have giving the film a very dramatic ending.
AUSTIN TEAM
This is the big story here. Why was it ignored?

Instead, for the end of the video, the Director or Producer decided to present the findings of the English team. They announced that they found the evidence of the Yeti to be “Genetically identical to a Polar Bear.”
POLAR BEAR
Why was these findings not questioned or
confirmed by another lab? And why was it
accepted as the final answer to the identity
of the Yeti?

But here, the voice over then goes on to ask,
“How do you explain the presence of a Polar bear among the world’s highest mountains? It’s a species that has only adapted to life on the ice flows of the north.” Here the narrator follows up with the statement, “One enigma replaces another.”  This conundrum is quickly glossed over. In other words, “Nothing to see here folks, move along.”

Why did the documentary makers jump so quickly to this conclusion as being the definitive answer to all the multiple investigations being conducted worldwide? And why did the English team jump the gun with their announcement? As the voice over states; “Contrary to the promise that no information will be available before the publication of a scientific article, the results were announced by the press amid great fanfare.”

The concluding argument goes on to dismisses the entire documentary with the following statement:
“So DNA joins the list of insufficient proof along with the examination of hair under the microscope, the study of foot prints that could have been man made and the gathering of personal accounts that could have been fabricated. Futile too are the photographs and videos taken day and night, all considered to be hoaxes.”

So in other words, all gathered field evidence and the approved scientific method should be completely ruled out in the search for the truth?
